Southampton, NY - Southampton College's Current Topics in Environmental Science lecture series tries out a new, more interactive format this spring with rare forums that bring local officials face to face with some of their harshest critics.
Starting off the series on February 7, local environmental groups and county, town and Brookhaven National Laboratory officials ask, "Where's the Science in Environmental Advocacy and Environmental Policy?" The events continue weekly and include topical discussions on nuclear safety with BNL officials and organizations like Group for the South Fork, genetic engineering of crops with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and organic farmers, and land-use issues and solutions with government officials, builders and environmental organizations such as Peconic Land Trust. Environmental Science Professor Robert Turner takes over management of the speaker series this year and hopes to create a venue that's different that than the constrained discourse commonly found in board meetings, where such opponents usually meet. "This will be a much looser format for learning about the environmental issues we face, and audience participation is counted on," Turner said. "It should be lively." Southampton College's Environmental Science program prepares students for graduate school and jobs in state and federal agencies, consulting and engineering firms, conservation, ecotourism and environmental education.
The Series All Current Topics in Environmental Science lectures are at 6 p.m. in the Business Center Lecture Hall and are free and open to the public. Call (631) 287-8396 for further information.
