The men's volleyball team, under new coach Ray MacLean, started their season with a 3-1 (23-30, 30-24, 31-29, 30-25) win at Eastern Mennonite University on Thursday, January 18. Six-foot-six senior middle hitter Ben Hill had 14 kills while sophomore outside hitter Joe Daigler had 43 assists in the win. The next day, despite nine kills from 6-5 sophomore middle hitter Scott Schult, the Colonials lost at powerhouse George Mason 3-0 (24-30, 18-30, 17-30) to even their record at 1-1. The Colonials go to Springfield on Wednesday, and then are home to face conference foe New York University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Runnin' Colonials basketball team (5-10, 4-7) got an important league win at home on Saturday vs. Bridgeport 71-61. Junior forward Jason Lewis led Southampton College with 25 points. Freshman Jye Watson added 22 points and 6-10 center Eric Bradley pulled down 10 boards. Bridgeport (2-11, 2-7) and Southampton College may be fighting for a playoff spot as the season winds down. The Runnin' Colonials go to New York Tech tonight and are home to face Queens Wednesday at 7 p.m., hoping to seek revenge after a heated loss away last month.
The Lady Colonials (9-6, 6-4) stayed in playoff stride in the first half of Saturday's doubleheader, upending Bridgeport 99-52. Senior point guard Melanie McCollum led the way with 20 points and five steals. Senior forward Shannan Henley added 16 points and grabbed eight boards while freshman guard Jaime Podjed came off the bench to score 16 points in 18 minutes. The Lady Colonials also go to NYIT tonight, and then start off Wednesday's home doubleheader vs. Queens at 5 p.m.
