Fax: (631) 283 4081Southampton, NY - Southampton College's Writers Talk winter/spring reading series opens with romantic poet Siv Cedering on Valentine's Day. She will mark the occasion by reading original love poems she has written over her distinguished career.
The series is presented by the College's Masters of Fine Arts in Writing program and continues through May 2 on Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. All lectures are free and open to the public with receptions to follow. For more information, contact Professor Indira Ganesan at (631) 287-8107.
Born in Sweden in 1939, Siv Cedering immigrated to San Francisco at 14 and became an American citizen five years later. The author of 18 books of poetry and fiction, Cedering is also a translator, composer and visual artist. She has written seven of her books - two novels and five books for children - in her native Swedish.
Cedering is a renaissance woman who believes in combining genres. Her paintings and sculptures have appeared in several exhibits, often incorporating poetic fragments in their composition. In her collection "Cup of Cold Water" (1973), Cedering paired her poems with her photographs. She also has illustrated several of her books, including "The Blue Horse and Other Night Poems" (1978), "Polis, polis, potatisgris" (1985) and "Grisen far till Paris" (1987).
Usually written in the first person, Cedering's poems often deal with the erotic and the sensuous realm. In her recent work, she has mixed elements of science and myth. Her poems have appeared in Partisan Review, New Republic and Paris Review. Her many grants and awards include the William Marion Reedy Award from the Poetry Society of America, a Pushcart Prize and an Emily Dickinson Award. In 1998 Karma Dog Editions published her most recent collection of poetry, "Letters from an Observatory: New and Selected Poems, 1973-1998." Cedering has three children and lives in Amagansett.
