Last year, the Lady Colonials fought their way into the post-season with an 18-12 (6-5 New York Collegiate Athletic Conference) record.
The Lady Colonials this year are 2-2 (1-0 NYCAC) after a three-game tournament at Bentley College September 8-9 and their league opener at Adelphi on Wednesday, Septmber 13. Southampton beat Stonehill in the tourney opener (15-13, 15-4, 13-15, 15-11), but lost to Bentley (4-15, 8-15, 7-15) and Merrimack (10-15, 8-15, 7-15) in the second round. Junior Brooke Obad had 51 assists in game one. Junior Noelle Kuhn finished the tourney with 37 kills in the three games.
Against Adelphi on Wednesday, Southampton won 3-2 (15-12, 13-15, 15-10, 14-16, 15-12). Noelle Kuhn registered 23 kills. Amber Sabrosky added 15 kills and 16 digs. Brooke Obad delivered 58 assists. The Lady Colonials? home opener is Wednesday, September 20, vs. Queens at 7 p.m.
With the exception of Laura Bonner (327 kills in 1999), who departed due to graduation, the core of last year's squad is back. Co-captain and offensive firecracker Kuhn (team high 357 kills) and fellow co-captain and setter Obad (team high 1060 assists) are key returnees to the Colonials this season along with sophomore Erica Shafer (191 digs), senior defensive specialist Cara Pekarcik, 6-foot-3 sophomore middle blocker Cindy Cleary (team high 36 blocked shots), junior Paige Adler, senior Kristen Bartoldus, and sophomores Marisa Baran and Erin Hall. New to the squad are freshmen Sabrosky, Allison Hoyt and Carrie Jack.
Also new to the Colonials is Coach Ray MacLean, 28, who will also take over the men's volleyball program this winter. MacLean grew up in Southold before becoming a player and then assistant coach as East Stroudsburg (Pa.) University. "Our goal is to improve upon last year and become one of the league's top teams," the coach said. "Being offered the job here was attractive, because this squad has excellent athleticism and the strong desire to win."
