Fax: (631) 283 4081It's an event where parents and kids have more fun root, root, rooting for the away team. At Southampton College, the slapstick Harlem Wizards will play a fund-raising basketball game vs. several of the Runnin? Colonials and other members of the student body.
While the Southampton College men's basketball team just came off a 12-13 season and a New York Collegiate Athletic Conference playoff run, the Wizards have won over 1000 straight games. Game time is 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, at the Southampton College Gym. Tickets are available in advance and at the door and cost $6 for adults and $4 for students with ID. Southampton College's Concert Committee sponsors the event. Call (631) 287-8361 for more information.
Unlike the Harlem Globetrotters who play the same opponent during every appearance, all Wizards games are legitimate competitions. Like other professional basketball teams, the prospects of victory are uncertain each time the Wizards take the court. Accordingly, it is a source of team pride that the Wizards have not lost a game since 1991 and have the longest winning streak in professional basketball. The Wizards last defeat came at the hands of Zhalgriris Kaunas of Lithuania, the 1984 European Cup championship runnerup and the same team that produced NBA star Arvydas Sarbonis. The Wizards, founded in 1962, have played over 5000 matches in the U.S. and abroad. Like the Globetrotters, they also mix in hijinks, trickery and audience involvement.
