The Southampton College women face St. Rose, the nation's No. 1 team, at 5 p.m. in the Southampton Gym. The Colonials are in second place in the NYCAC with a 16-3 record. They take on first-place St. Rose, a team yet to be beaten this year in 25 games.
The Lady Colonials are on the bubble of making the NCAA tournament. They would be the first women's team in Southampton College history to make it. Playing St. Rose tough would push the Lady Colonials up in the rankings. Currently, the Lady Colonials are rated No. 7 in the Northeast, the top six teams make the NCAAs.
Colonial senior Rita Breivaite is expected to grab her 800th career rebound Saturday. Her 798 boards so far have obliterated the school record of 625. Breivaite's 1275 career points rate her third on the all-time list.
The Lady Colonials lost to St. Rose away earlier in the year, but both of Southampton's point guards were injured and the team had trouble scoring against St. Rose's No. 2-ranked defense. "We'll be at full strength this time, and we'll be on our home court," said Southampton coach Tony Bozzella. "We definitely have a chance to beat them."
Then at 7:30 p.m. the Runnin' Colonials (12-11, 11-8 NYCAC) take on the St. Rose men (16-6, No. 7 in the Northeast). The Runnin? Colonials recently clinched an NYCAC playoff berth.
Get tickets for both games at the single-game price: $2/$1 students.
