Fax: (631) 283 4081Southampton College's stellar senior soccer goalie Roger Svensson was named to the All-American Division II Third Team on Thursday, December 7. A possible major-league soccer selection, Svensson led the Colonials to undefeated New York Collegiate Athletic Conference records and league titles the past two seasons.
Svensson, an imposing 6-foot-1, 200-pound import from Solvesborg, Sweden, is known for his aggressive play and leadership on and off the field, and has been a team captain on the Colonials the past two seasons. He ended the 2000 season allowing just 1.17 goals per game as Southampton went 13-3-2 (7-0-1 NYCAC), narrowly missing an NCAA tournament berth.
He allowed just .60 goals per game the previous season as the Colonials made it to the NCAA quarterfinals, finishing with a 16-1-2 record. In Svensson's four years with the Colonials, he has an amazing 57-12-6 record and 27.5 shutouts.
Svensson was also named to the All-Region First Team this year and was Second Team All-Region last year. He has made the NYCAC First Team all four years. Other Colonials making the NYCAC First Team this year include Peter Nillson, Anders Wahrnberg, Ragnar Arnarson and Daniel Olsson. Making the NYCAC Second Team: Andreas Lindberg and Carl Lindgren. Coach Ed Goodhines was NYCAC Coach of the Year while Nilsson received Rookie of the Year honors.
The All-American selections were chosen by the sport's governing body, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and adidas.
