Seal walks and seal cruises led by Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island (CRESLI) researchers are taking place this winter and spring.

The walks and cruises offer the public a unique opportunity to observe wild seals in their natural environment as they feed and haul out to rest and socialize. Local sea birds and wintering sea ducks can also be observed during these excursions. CRESLI naturalists who lead the walks and cruises will explain seal behavior, biology and evolution, as well as coastal ecology.

The seal walks take approximately three hours and require about three miles of walking. The remaining seal walks are: March 4 at 10 a.m., March 19 at 10:30 a.m., April 1 at 9 a.m., April 16 at 11 a.m., April 29 at 9 a.m. and May 13 at 9 a.m. Suggested donations are $5 per person.

Seal cruises will leave from the Viking Dock in Montauk and will take place on the following dates: March 26 at 10 a.m. and April 9 at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $25 per adult and $15 per child under 12.

Cameras, binoculars and layers of warm clothing are highly recommended. CRESLI's seal research is being conducted with the assistance of students and faculty from Southampton College of Long Island University, where the program is based.

The April 9 seal cruise will include a group of high school students from South Carolina, visiting New York on a grant given to Kingsborough Community College and Leon M. Goldstein High School. The students will also be given a tour of the Marine Science Center at Southampton College and will be guests of the college for dinner. Other students from high schools and colleges will also join CRESLI on that seal cruise.

All CRESLI walks and cruises are open to the public. Please contact CRESLI for details and reservations at 631-287-8223, or visit their web site, www.cresli.org.
