With a double-overtime 2-2 stalemate against the No. 1 Div. II team in the country, the Southampton College Colonials made a statement on Saturday, Sept. 2.

The No. 5-ranked Colonials men's soccer team (1-0-1) stymied defending National Champion Southern Connecticut (0-0-2) on the Owls? home field, thanks to goals by Peter Nilsson and Rich Stoia. On Friday, Sept. 1, the Colonials beat Kutztown State (1-1-0) 3-0 in the first round of the Fila/Quality Inn Autumn Classic Tournament in New Haven with the help of two goals by Ragnar Arnarson and one by Phil Bonelli. Southampton took the season-opening tournament title by ending it with the best record.

The Colonials have been a nemesis for Southern Connecticut. The last team the Owls lost to was Southampton in 1998. Last year, an injury-depleted Southampton squad took the Owls to four overtimes in the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Colonials next take on the University of New Haven away on Thursday, Sept. 7, then are home to face Merrimack at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10.

The Lady Colonials open their season at home tomorrow, Sept. 6, at 4 p.m. vs. East Stroudburg University.
