II, 8-7 in overtime on Saturday, then thumping St. Andrew's College 15-8 at a neutral field at Villanova University on Sunday.
Versus West Chester (4-1), the Colonials stormed back with four unanswered goals in the fourth period to go ahead 7-6 on a Rich Stoia rocket. But with :01 left, West Chester whizzed a shot past standout Colonial goalie Larry Falkman (22 saves) to tie it. In sudden-death overtime, Colonial Ken Monz fed Chris Asaro for a goal 1:48 onto the period for the win. The Colonials upped their record to 2-0 Sunday by beating St. Andrew's (1-4) 15-8. Asaro had four goals and three assists; Stoia added four goals and Monz three goals.
Southampton's schedule was so tough last year, the team had ended 6-7 and the season-ending coaches poll still ranked them No. 10 in the nation in Div. II - the only non-winning team to be ranked. The Colonials had beaten Dowling, which was No. 4 at the time, at Dowling and had almost beaten No. 1 Adelphi, losing 11-10 in overtime. This season's preseason poll again ranked the Colonials No. 10. While All American Rob Roddini departed due to graduation (5.08 points per game), 1999 goal leader Monz (2.28 goals per game), a 5-9 senior from Rocky Point, NY, returns for his last campaign along with stellar attacker Asaro, a 6-0 senior from Holtsville, NY. They are joined by newcomer Mike Daquino, a 5-9 junior college All American from Farmingville, NY. Goalie Falkman, last year an All American Second Teamer, also returns. The Ronkonkoma, NY, native's save percentage of 69.6 last year led the league. Athletic midfielder Stoia is from Shirley, NY.
The schedule this year is even tougher for the Colonials. Seven of the team's 11 games are vs. ranked foes, including the country's top three teams: national champ Adelphi, CW Post and New York Institute of Technology.
The Colonials' 2000 home opener is Wednesday, March 22, vs. Plymouth State (0-0) at 3 p.m.
