Slaughter is an associate professor of art at Southampton College of Long Island University.
"Images of India" celebrates 50 years of India's Republic and will be on display in the University Club on 1135 Sixteenth Street NW in Washington, DC, May 4-June 3. Opening reception is Thursday, May 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. The gallery can be reached at (202) 939-7002.
Slaughter's paintings in the exhibit were inspired by a four-month visit to India on a Fulbright scholarship. There, he found stark contrasts: significant monuments surrounded by shantytowns; immense poverty but people with such a deep spirituality that they live contently and gracefully. "My extensive journey throughout the country was, without exaggeration, an intense, life-changing experience," he said. "Though traveling in India is both physically and mentally demanding, it is the most visually stimulating place I have ever witnessed; a painter's paradise." Slaughter previously painted an acclaimed African series, and often chooses his subjects based on his concern for human conditions.
