William Hennessy, a 26-year veteran of William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach, has been named the 2000 Secondary Teacher of the Year by Southampton College of Long Island University. He is an Advanced Placement American History teacher and coach of the school's award-winning Mock Trial Team.

Hennessy will receive his award on Sunday, May 21 at 2 p.m. at commencement ceremonies at Southampton College. Keynote speaker for the event will be Grammy Award winner Billy Joel. Hennessy will receive a $500 honorarium and the school district will receive $1000 at a special 11 a.m. brunch for the College's honorees.

Founder of the Criminal Justice and Psychology programs at William Floyd, Hennessy coached the winning student team in the New York State Bar Association Mock Trial Competition last year, a grueling academic challenge in which 500 schools competed. "He's an extraordinary educator," said Principal Robert Feeney. "He has dedicated his career to encouraging, promoting and achieving academic success for each of his students. To be in his classroom is to witness the model of student-teacher relationships."

Hennessy is chairman of William Floyd's Social Studies department, has worked with the Department of Regents on their statewide exams and is a trainer for the American History Regents exam scoring. He earned a B.A. in Political Science in 1966 from Fordham University and in 1990 earned a M.A. in Education from Newport University.

Hennessy lives in East Setauket.
