That changed Saturday, March 4, as the Colonials got two wins in their annual Windmill Classic tournament at Southampton College of Long Island University. The Colonials (2-14) finally snapped their two-month losing streak and Gleason, who came into the game with a career record of 199-143, became only the second coach at the college to amass over 200 wins. (The other is current men's soccer coach Ed Goodhines.)
The Colonials beat Sacred Heart 3-1 (15-8, 7-15, 15-3, 15-8) in Saturday's early game, then rallied to upset New York University in the afternoon 3-2 (11-15, 10-15, 15-8, 15-8, 16-14). Chris Kies and Joe Daigler led all scorers with 20 kills apiece vs. NYU, but the Violets (9-8) eventually won the tournament, beating George Mason University in the final.
Gleason, 36, who founded the Southampton men's volleyball program in 1990, has guided the Colonials to five various championships. He has been so successful, the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association included Southampton College with top teams like Penn State when it regrouped its divisions based on competitiveness this year. Gleason lives in Hampton Bays with his wife, Jane, and three children, Victoria, Katrina and Shane.
