Fax: (631) 283 4081Today, October 17, at 4:00 p.m., Southampton Town Councilpersons Carolyn Zenk and Patrick Skip Heaney will join with Southampton College Provost Timothy Bishop to formally recognize receipt of the College's $15,000 charitable contribution to the Town's Environmental Savings Program and the Department of Human Services.
The special acknowledgment will take place at the Southampton College Marine Station, situated on the left side of Little Neck Road, located directly across from Long Island University's Southampton College Campus.
According to Councilman Heaney (Class of '83), who serves as legislative chair for environmental and land use policies and programming, "Southampton Town is very appreciative and fortunate to have a partner like Southampton College of Long Island University to work on environmental initiatives within our community. In recent years, Southampton College has participated both financially and with extensive expertise with regard to environmental policy-formation, wetlands restoration, and endangered species protection in our township. This year's substantial donation to the Environmental Savings Fund will be used to underwrite an expansion of a marine biology partnership between the College and local government related to protection of our environmental resources."
Southampton College Provost Timothy Bishop stated that, "We choose to donate to the Environmental Savings Program because many of our students in our marine and environmental programs have participated in internships with the town in these areas."
The $15,0000 donation from Southampton College is the result of an agreement between the Town and the College for a Special Event Permit issued to Long Island University for its popular annual "All for the Sea" benefit concert held July 31, 2000 to benefit marine science scholarships. . According to Councilwoman Carolyn Zenk, who serves as legislative liaison on the Southampton Town Board for Special Events Permits, "As sponsor of the resolution accepting a $10,000 contribution to the Town's Environmental Savings Fund and a $5,000
donation to the Town's Department of Human Services, and waiving the police costs associated with this popular festival-style concert event, I am pleased to see that the College has made a substantial contribution back to our community. In light of the many benefits Southampton College provides to the community including high-quality jobs, special lectures, and events that enhance the cultural and scientific ambiance of Southampton, as well as an outstanding marine biology program, the members of the Southampton Town Board agreed to waive police costs associated with the annual concert. In lieu thereof, Southampton College has graciously offered two substantial donations to the Town's Environmental Savings Fund and the Department of Human Services. Southampton College has made a substantial contribution to preserve and protect our environmental resources as well as assisting the most needy and disadvantaged people in our community, including battered women and poor children, and to improve race relations."
At the ceremony today, October 17, at 4:00 p.m., Southampton Town Officials will present Provost Tim Bishop with a Special Recognition Certificate to acknowledge receipt of Southampton College's substantial contributions to the Town's Environmental Savings Fund and Department of Human Services.
