Fax: (631) 283 4081Southampton, NY - Dr. Kathleen Dudzinski, a research scientist with the Oceanic Society Expeditions based in California, will speak at Southampton College of Long Island University Thursday evening October 12. Her talk on "Dolphin Communications" is the second of the Marine Science lecture series held this fall, which is open to the public.
Dr. Dudzinski, a National Science Foundation International Fellow, is an advisor to the Bahamas Dolphin Project of the Oceanic Society. The Society has sponsored research since 1984 studying how wild dolphins behave in their own environment off the Bahamas banks; in the early 1990s, the Society added dolphin communications as a specific component of its ongoing research there. From 1993-96, Dr. Dudzinski conducted the Bahamas Dolphin project research in fulfillment of her doctoral thesis.
Her lecture will focus on how dolphins exchange information using postures, touch, specific sounds (including unique whistles) and other behavior. "Dolphin Communications" is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the Duke Lecture Hall. It is free and open to the public.
The final lecture in the fall Marine Science series is "Travels With Blackfish and White Whales," offered by Dr. David St. Aubin, Thursday, November 30, 6:30 p.m. in Duke Lecture Hall.
The Marine Science lectures are sponsored by the John P. McGrath Fund of Long Island University. Dr. Dudzinski's lecture is co-sponsored by the Honors Program of Southampton College.
