Fax: (631) 283 4081Southampton, NY - Robert Leuci, the celebrated crime fiction writer who draws upon his experience as a New York City detective in his books, is leading the College's first-ever Crime Fiction Workshop at its 25th annual Summer Writers Conference.
Leuci illuminates the murky underworld of cops and crooks. There are no clean lines between the good guys and the bad guys in his stories as he reveals the slippery slope between honesty and corruption. He's been praised for writing with an authoritative voice classic detective fiction, police procedurals and mysteries. "In the writings of the world of cops and the mob there is no more authentic voice than Bob Leuci's," writes "Wiseguy" author Nicholas Pileggia.
Bob Leuci knows from whence he writes. He witnessed firsthand the corruption that permeated New York's criminal justice system when he worked for the NYPD. When he decided to testify in the 1970s during a widespread Federal investigation of that closed system, his own life was transformed. He retired from the New York City police department after more than 20 years in the narcotics and organized crime units. The painful aftermath of Leuci's experience was captured by writer Robert Daley in his famous book, "Prince of the City," which was later turned into a movie.
He has gone on to write seven novels-"Fence Jumpers," "Snitch," "Odessa Beach," "Doyle's Disciples," "Captain Butterfly," "Double Edge" and most recently "Blaze"-as well as reviews, articles and movie and television scripts. He is writing the screenplay for his book "Fence Jumpers" now for film director Michael Corrente and actor David Caruso. He lives in Saunderstown, Rhode Island. Last year he was awarded the South County Center for the Arts Literary Award in Rhode Island.
Leuci is one of four writers conducting workshops at the Summer Writers Conference at Southampton College of Long Island University, June 28 through July 6. Writers can sign up for workshops on poetry (William Heyen), fiction (John Dufresne) and short story writing (June Spence) in addition to crime fiction writing; the conference includes a public lecture/reading series in the evenings at Duke Lecture Hall. (Schedule enclosed.)
The conference may be taken for graduate or undergraduate credit, or audited. On-campus housing is available for conference participants. The public lecture series costs $75.00 for the entire series or $15.00 per event.
For information on Conference Workshop fees and tuition, call the Southampton College Summer Programs Office at (631) 287-8175 or 287-8349. Or email questions to summer@southmpton.liu.edu.
