The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research & Preservation was honored with the Southampton College Cooperative Education Employer of the Year Award on June 29 in the Kanas Lobby of Chancellors Hall at 1:15 p.m. Guest lecturer was New York State Assemblyman Fred Thiele.

The Foundation conducts research and education programs about the region's marine habitats. It operates whale watches and seal cruises, educating approximately 18,000 people a year about marine environments. Over the years, the Foundation has hired 75 Southampton College marine-science students through the College's Cooperative Education program. Currently five Southampton students work for the Foundation and another five work for partner Atlantis Marine World.

The Foundation's partnership with the College is a natural, as Southampton is internationally known for its programs in marine and environmental sciences. Since 1979, more than 2600 Southampton College students have participated in the Co-Op program, placed in 37 states and 17 countries.
