After a highly successful year in which eight of its 10 teams had winning percentages of .500 or better, Southampton College of Long Island University is reloading its coaching staff for next season with some new additions. Softball, women's tennis and men's and women's volleyball will all see new leaders in the 2000-01 school year.

Cindy Corwith, who resigned her position as softball coach earlier this month so she could devote more time to her duties as Southampton College Associate Athletic Director, Sports Information Director and Physical Education Instructor, has built a club that should contend well next season with the league leaders. The softball team, which ended this past season with a 7-13 New York Collegiate Athletic Conference record, narrowly missed a playoff berth. Composed almost wholly of freshmen and sophomores, the Colonials showed a lot of promise. Freshman pitcher Kim Carroll, despite suffering an injury that didn?t allow her to swing a bat all season, threw a no-hitter and will be at full strength next year after surgery. Corwith also recruited lights-out California pitcher Shayma Hill for next fall. Carroll and Hill should be a fierce Colonial one-two punch in coming seasons. Corwith was the sole head coach of the Colonials for the past eight seasons. As co-head coach with Ed Goodhines in 1991 and 1992, the Lady Colonials took NYCAC titles.

Taking over as softball head coach will be Cassie Arroyo, who graduated from Southampton College in 1998 and debuted as assistant coach in 1999. A graduate of Bayport-Bluepoint High School, she came to Southampton as a catcher, learned to pitch her sophomore year and by her senior year was a starting hurler. "Her knowledge of the game made her a valuable asset to our coaching staff," Corwith said. "I'm leaving the team in very capable hands." Arroyo works for Cedric Kushner Promotions, which handles boxing events and is based in Water Mill and Manhattan. She lives in Hampton Bays.

Earlier this year, men's volleyball coach Scott Gleason and women's volleyball coach Kevin DeLauriers resigned so that they could devote more time to their careers. Hired to replace both is Ray MacLean of Farmingville, NY. MacLean was an assistant coach for men's and women's volleyball teams at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania from 1996-98. At ESU he also was a star player from 1991-95 and went on to earn his M.Ed. there in physical education. Last fall, the Southampton College women's volleyball team went 18-12, while the men were 5-22.

Taking over for women's tennis coach Julia Denny, who resigned to devote more time to her playing career, is Glenn Nathan of Shirley, NY. Nathan has been tennis pro at several clubs and has been an assistant coach of men's and women's tennis at Adelphi and SUNY-Old Westbury. The Lady Colonials tennis team was 4-4 last fall.
