Fax: (631) 283 4081Southampton, NY - After the best season in team history, Jim Meyer pledges to keep the Lady Colonials' winning tradition going. Announced today by Athletic Director Mary Topping as the new Head Coach, Meyer takes over a team that was 20-9 and is a favorite to win a league championship this upcoming season. He was Assistant Coach at the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University the past three seasons.
"I love this team I'm inheriting. Half of these kids I tried to recruit to play for me in Brooklyn," Meyer said. "Part of the allure of taking the job was the high quality of the players."
In a switch of sorts, former Colonials Head Coach Tony Bozzella had been chosen last month to take over Brooklyn's team, the Lady Blackbirds. Both a part of the Long Island University system, Southampton competes in NCAA Division II while Brooklyn is in Division I.
Meyer helped with the turn-around of the Lady Blackbirds. This past season the team came in third place in the Northeast Conference with a best-ever 11-7 league record and 13-16 record overall - the most wins in a season for the team in 12 years.
"We are thrilled to have Jim aboard," Topping said. "He's a great motivator and really knows how to recruit."
Topping said that Meyer, 31, will fit in well because the style of game he teaches is the style the Lady Colonials play: fast-paced with a breaking offense, a pressing defense and a lot of ball movement. The Lady Colonials made the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament the past three seasons, winning ECAC championships twice. With powerhouse St. Rose leaving the league this year, the Lady Colonials are expected to contend for a New York Collegiate Athletic Conference title in 2000-01. Photo available by e-mail.
