"We are thrilled to have our friend Jimmy Buffett back on stage at Southampton College," said Robert F.X. Sillerman, Chancellor of the College. "His 1996 performance sold out and was one of the most popular All For The Sea concerts we've had."
An active environmentalist and best selling author, Jimmy Buffett has become a legend of popular culture as the composer of such classic songs as "Margaritaville," "Cheeseburger in Paradise," and "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes." His throng of fans --affectionately known as "Parrotheads" -- flock to his concerts in outrageous tropical outfits and flamboyant hats.
Buffett has written three best-sellers. His 1998 book "A Pirate Looks at Fifty" went straight to the New York Times best-seller list, making him the sixth author in that list's history to have reached number one on both the fiction and non-fiction lists. His new home video, "Tales From Margaritavision" featuring all his music videos over the past 20 years, is set for release June 13th.
This concert is part of his sold-out Summer 2000 Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays Tour, named for his latest CD. Buffett said this about the Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays album: "These days?e just play Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. When our ship comes in, the party begins. If angst is your diet and serious thought is your idea of recreation, then please don't buy this record. But, if you like the beach, need some escapism and like to laugh, stomp and dance, then you have come to the right spot."
The Southampton College concert, outdoors on the athletic fields, begins at 7:30 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m. All tickets are advance purchase only. No tickets will be sold at the gate on the day of the performance. Alcohol, coolers, cans, bottles, food, beverages, and recording devices are prohibited. Food and beverages will be sold, and concert-goers should bring a blanket or beach chair. Seating is festival-style.
An East End summer tradition since 1992, the nine previous All For The Sea concerts have raised 3.5 million dollars for scholarships. The marine and environmental science programs at the college are nationally known for their excellence and have produced 32 Fulbright Scholars, a Marshall Scholar and two Udall Scholars.
The All For The Sea concerts began in 1992 with Crosby, Stills & Nash, followed by Tina Turner (1993), Foreigner and the Doobie Brothers (1994), Tony Bennett (1995), The Allman Brothers (1996), Jimmy Buffett and The Coral Reefer Band (1996), James Taylor and his Band (1997), Rod Stewart (1998), and Tom Petty (1999).
