Fax: (631) 283 4081Southampton, NY - The Amazon River Basin is the site of a new Tropical Field Studies course, scheduled for January, just opened to interested members of the public. The course, "2001: Amazonia," stresses biology and environmental science and is offered by the Natural Science Division at Southampton College of Long Island University.
The three-credit course will be taught by Professors Art Goldberg, William Schutt and Scott Mori, as well as instructors from the American Museum of Natural History and the New York Botanical Garden. The course is designed for Biology and Environmental Science majors but no prior familiarity with tropical field studies and techniques is assumed. Interested members of the public should call Art Goldberg at the College within the next week, as travel arrangements are necessary.
Students will study the natural history, ecology, and biology of this exotic area of Brazil. Participants will also learn about the indigenous peoples of the Amazon and examine environmental conservation issues. The program contains an element of risk as it is designed to be an experiential, hands-on opportunity to study in remote areas. Students will spend three nights in Manaus, Brazil, five nights at "Km 41" (a reserve of the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project), and 11 nights on board an Amazon Riverboat visiting sites along the Amazon River and Rio Negro.
Total cost for the course is $3,300, which includes roundtrip airfare, tuition and ground travel expenses while in Brazil. "2001: Amazonia" will take place from January 3 - January 24, 2001. Anyone interested in learning more about this course should call Art Goldberg immediately at (631) 287-8404.
