Patrick J. Perl (1992-93)
Marine Biology major

Studied zooplankton ecology at the Taupo Institute for Scientific Research in New Zealand, and in Antarctica. P.J. spent two years working at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the Department of Applied Sciences, after which he became Assistant Lab Curator in the Biology Department at SUNY, Stony Brook.

Kathy Barbeau (1991-92)
Marine Chemistry major

Studied the relationship between trace elements and phytoplankton at the University Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium. Kathy completed her doctorate in chemical oceanography at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution/MIT joint program in July 1998, and then began working on a postdoc at The University of California, Santa Barbara.

Carol Kosman (1991-92)
Marine Biology major

Studied rare species of Antarctic sea-ice plankton at the Institut for Sporeplanter, University of Copenhagen, in Denmark. Carol finished her Master's Degree in Biological Oceanography at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and began working at a government laboratory in Washington, D.C., and contemplating going back to graduate school.

Kirstin Loop (1990-91)
Marine Biology major

Spent a year in Australia studying the endangered Hawkbill Sea Turtle along the Great Barrier Reef, under the auspices of the Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service. She completed her doctorate at Texas A & M University in June 1996, where she worked with Dr. Andre Landry (her original Internship sponsor) following four more return trips to Australia to complete her research. Kristin married an Aussie in October 1996 and remained in Townsville, continuing her research on sea turtles, and accepting Interns with the Department of Environment and Heritage.

Norris Armstrong (1985-86)
Marine Biology major

Studied antifreeze proteins in blood sera of fish and invertebrates at the University of Kiel, West Germany. When last contacted, Norris had received his Ph.D. from Duke University, and was working to complete a postdoctoral appointment in developmental biology at the University of California at Berkeley.

Jeff Riegel (1983-84)
Biology major

Studied at the Institute for Genetic Research in Cologne, West Germany. Completed his Ph.D. in Immunology at the University of California, Berkeley and a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University. Jeff then became a scientific writer and editor at a biomedical communications company in Cleveland. From Cleveland, Jeff moved to North Carolina with plans to teach Biology part time at local universities.

Beatrice Chasse (1983-84)
Biology major

Studied Paleobiology and History of Science in Belgium. Whereabouts unknown. She may still be in Belgium. (If you've seen her, have her get in touch with us.)

Martyn Botfield (1982-83)
Marine Biology major

Received his Master's Degree in Marine Biology from the University of Hawaii and then studied the ecology of Giant Clams along the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Martyn received his doctorate in Biochemistry from Harvard University, where he stayed on to do medical research while also running one of their nuclear magnetic resonance laboratories.

Elizabeth McKenna (1981-82)
Biology/Chemistry double major

Received Fulbright for Bio-chemistry/Toxicology research in Switzerland, but the laboratory cancelled the fellowship at the last moment. Completed her doctorate at SUNY, Stony Brook, in Pharmacology. Held a post-doctoral position in Neurosurgery at SUNY Stony Brook, studying the blood-brain barrier. Became a consultant in Life Sciences and Public Health at an Environmental Firm, then a Board-certified toxicologist, and freelance scientific consultant, writer, and editor.

Bob Miller (1979-80)
Marine Chemistry, Marine Biology double major

Studied geochemistry in France. Received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Rensellaer Polytechnic Institute, and after postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, took a position with Genzyme Corporation in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Steve Poet (1978-79)
Marine Chemistry, Marine Biology double major

Studied marine bio-chemistry at the Roche Research Institute of Marine Pharmacology in Dee Why, Australia. Received his Master's Degree in Immunology at Oregon State University, and then spent a year in Hawaii studying coral reef ecology. He returned to Oregon State and became the first student in the school's history to receive both the DVM (Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine) and Ph.D. Degrees. After spending another year on a postdoctoral appointment at OSU studying viral diseases in marine mammals, Steve accepted a faculty position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia, in Athens, in September 1995, and has had several Interns working in his lab.

Robert Bernatzky (1977-78)
Biology major

Studied marine pollution and plant biochemistry at the University of Melbourne, in Australia. Received his Master's and Ph.D. Degrees in Plant Genetics at the University of California, Davis and New Mexico State University. Robert went on to become an Associate Professor of Biology in the Plant and Soil Science Department at the University of Massachusetts, in Amherst.

Lisa Morehouse (1976-77)
Marine Chemistry/Marine Geology double major

Studied geo-chemistry in New Zealand. Taught chemistry, mathematics and biology in Wellington. When last contacted, Lisa had moved back to Connecticut, where she owned a travel agency, and had plans to begin teaching again.

Jeff Coderre (1975-76)
Marine Chemistry/Marine Biology double major

Studied geochemistry at the University of Reykjavik, in Iceland. Received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Yale University, and did cancer research during postdoctoral studies at the University of California, San Francisco. Jeff later became a research scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory using Boron Neutron Capture Therapy to treat cancers. One of the first Southampton Graduate Campus students to work at Brookhaven, Jeff has had over a dozen Interns working in his lab over the past years.

Our Fulbright scholars had completed Internships, and in most instances, Co-op and summer research experiences as well.
