RECYCLING PROGRAM

Recycling became a high-profile endeavor the last several years when a dedicated group of student environmental activists took over the leadership of the program. These students collected recyclables, washed them and transported them to Southampton Town’s Recycling Center. Also, they successfully petitioned the college to establish a Green Fee, which provides money to hire a part-time Environmental Coordinator. The Environmental Coordinator is responsible for supervising the recycling program.

Pete Maniscalco was hired and now coordinates the recycling program. Under Pete’s leadership, all campus paper has been included in the recycling program. Two new state-of-the-art recycling bins have been purchased and are an aesthetic as well as functional campus asset. Additional recycling units – which are made of recycled materials – will be purchased this summer. Our next upgrade is to make certain all campus events offer participants a chance to recycle.

In addition to Pete, the recycling staff includes two student workers. Kasey Jacobs will be a junior next semester and is Co-President of PEACE, the college environmental organization. Jon Brown also will be a junior next year and he is an Eagle Scout. Both are committed to making the recycling program work. Kasey does some of the personal contact to make sure the program is functioning properly and Jon picks up most of the recycling. Pete and Jon transport the recyclables to the Town Recycling Center in a Physical Plant truck.
