Recycling

The Greenprint continued its multi-year program to expand campus recycling. The College constructed new recycling bins for campus dormitories. These green bins provide for the recycling of aluminum cans, plastic bottles, white paper, glass, newspaper, and batteries. Next year, additional bins will be constructed, and we will focus more attention on recycling education.

Earth Day

Thanks largely to the efforts of P.E.A.C.E., the campus enjoyed a successful celebration of Earth Day this April. There were vendors representing environmental organizations, bands provided music, and local companies provided alternative energy exhibits, including a Toyota Prius and photovoltaic gadgets from Go Solar.

Solar Aquatic Treatment Plant

Our goal is to construct a Solar Aquatics Treatment Plant within the next five to six years. We have initiated contact with several outside companies to devise a Solar Aquatics facility that would treat over half of the College's wastewater.

Center for Environmental Conservation

This year, the Greenprint began a 7-year process for constructing a new academic building for environmental programs. The building will use green technologies, like solar energy, and will house classrooms, offices, and environmental displays. The proposed building will be a center for community-college collaborative research projects. This semester the Greenprint drafted a set of goals and functions for the new facility. Architects will next develop sketches for the proposed building and the adjoining Solar Aquatic Treatment plant.

Energy Conservation

If energy costs continue to rise, energy conservation will receive more regional attention. This year, the Greenprint distributed flyers explaining how to use the energy saving features on desktop computers. Our goal is to hire a part-time energy/recycling coordinator for the campus next year. We are also investigating the feasibility of siting a 10 kw wind turbine on campus through LIPA.

Student Coops

Beginning next year, the Greenprint hopes to hire student coops to expand the Greenprint's campus activities.

Campus Education

The Greenprint initiated a campus education focus, offering several forums for students, faculty, and staff to provide input on Greenprint program.
