Internships and Independent Projects

The following are a list of internships and independent projects students pursued through the South Asia Center in previous years:

Human issues /social change

1. Children’s Issues- Voluntary Internships with children in the urban areas etc,- organizations dealing with street children, orphanages and alternative educational methodologies, working with physically and mentally challenged children, volunteering with the Missionaries of Charity (Mother Theresa nuns).
2. Women’s Issues- study of women’s issues in traditional and changing societies-research/interview project. Voluntary Internship with organizations dealing with women empowerment in rural areas, women’s rights, Tibetan women’s issues.
3. Effects of tourism on local population, indigenous peoples.
4. Effects of globalization on agricultural, traditional practices( crafts, traditions)
5. Media and its effects on local culture.
6. Societies in transition-rural development
7. Tibetan Life, religion and culture

VI. Natural Sciences/Environmental issues

1. Alternate systems of healing
2. Sustainable living- exploration of sustainable communities by participation in such communities
3. Sustainable, organic agriculture, internship at an organic farm
4. Wild-life –human/nature -human conflict in South Asia
5. Effect of tourism on natural environment.
6. Effects of urbanization on natural resources.

VII. Arts literature and Composition

1. Study of Women’s literature in South Asia
2.
Indian writing in English – study or focus on a group of writers or one writer
3. Apprenticeship in Artist’s Village (subject to student capability and talent)
4. Film critiques

VIII. Religions and Philosophy

1. Meditation and holistic spirituality
2. Study of ancient religious practices.
3. Study of Eastern Philosophies
4. Living and participation in ashrams devoted to Gandhian and other philosophies
5. Tibetan Buddhism
