Introduction
to Your Portfolio Resource Guidebook
The more Portfolios you complete, the clearer you will be about the process of putting one together. But for the increasing number of us who haven't spent ten years mastering the Art of the Portfolio, there is a need to share ideas, information, and encouragement. The Portfolio is one of the central aspects of a Friends World education; it must be a central focus of our attention.
This document was inspired by the Journal Writing Workshop Handbook of Inspiration put out by the European Center in 1991. I discovered it the next year when I was at the Middle East/Israel Center, and was duly inspired by it. It has been my wish and design this semester to do something to continue the spirit of that Handbook, and also to supplement it. The 1991 Inspiration Handbook was put together by a group who chose to focus on the inspirational aspects of Portfolio writing, to complement the organizational perspective given by the Student Handbook. This Portfolio Resource Guidebook, I hope, will fit in between these other two resources, supporting and integrating them.
The present project is partly a compilation of the output of the Portfolio Workshops that we held over the course of the Fall of 1995, but I have also filled it out copiously with bits of advice picked up from various students, staff, faculty, alums, and other friends and resources over the past years. The format is designed to encourage readers to form Portfolio Workshops of their own to discuss these or their own issues. It is also designed to speak to complete newcomers to the Friends World universe as much as possible. By compiling the project by myself, I acknowledge that I am taking something away from the communal spirit in which the real work was done (in the workshops themselves), but this is (hopefully) for the greater good of having a completed product in hand.
