Other Media
This is the catch-all section that hopefully will get shorter and shorter over the years as people write their own sections for photography, film, video, audio recording, performance art, MOO virtual environments (nobody's ever done that one before, but who knows?), Hypertext Markup Language for making World Wide Web pages (you are right now reading the very first Portfolio segment ever put onto the Web), or whatever.
The points that held true for the sections on visual and verbal arts mostly hold true here: make sure that your audience can understand what you have done and why.
These are the media of documentation used least often in Friends World Portfolios, but they are important anyway. Film and videotaping are artistic and documentary media in themselves, with advantages and limitations of their own. In addition, they are important ways of recording the processes and products of all kinds of other projects, especially those involving some kind of performance not easily shown in a photo (theater, dance, music, puppetry, ritual, sports, etc.). Many students have used audiotape as documentation for music, language, and other kinds of projects. Several of these media are good diary media for people who may be more comfortable with a camera or a tape recorder than with a blank page. Try it and see.
Workshop Discussion Sparks
- Advantages and limitations of various media: photos, video, film, sound recording, virtual environments, etc.
Inspired and Creative
- If there is a particular format with which you are familiar, consider creating a Friends World Manual for other students. A lot of folks would appreciate a pamphlet on the basics of photography, or video, or whatever.
Rigorous Training
- Educate yourself. If you are going to record, learn something about recording techniques and voice projection. If you are filming, learn something about lighting. The medium is as much a part of the learning process as is the topic at hand.
AAAAAGGGHHHH!
- Look through some old Portfolios to see what has been done in the past.
