Dear Friends World Graduates, Families and Friends:

Below is information you will find useful as you begin to make your plans for the Friends World Commencement weekend.  I have listed the tentative outline of Friends World Senior Recognition Day; events to be held on Saturday, May 21, 2005 are scheduled as follows:

8:30am Continental Breakfast – Kanas Lobby, Chancellor’s Hall
9:00am-12:00pm Welcome, Dean of Friends World Program and Provost Southampton College
Senior Presentations – Duke Lecture Hall
12:00pm-1:15pm Lunch
1:15pm-3:30pm Senior Presentations
3:30pm-4:00pm Move to the athletic center gym for formal ceremony
4:00pm-4:30pm  Graduation introduction, Senior thesis and other award presentations
4:30pm Speakers (to be announced)
5:30pm Award diplomas & Reception

As you can see, we have a full day.  Senior presentations will be scheduled by our FWP office and you will be assigned a timeframe.  So please let me know exactly what type of audio/visual/technology you will need.  All activities for graduation weekend begin on time.

On Sunday, May 22, 2005 FW students are encouraged to participate in the Southampton College/LIU cap and gown graduation.  All of the Long Island University officials attend this ceremony.  Students are introduced by the Dean of the Friends World Program, and receive their diplomas from the President.

All FW students march together with this year’s faculty Marshal, Meg Burchnall.  This ceremony is complete with commencement speakers, recipients of honorary degrees, and the full regalia of a traditional graduation followed by a reception.  I urge you to check out the Southampton College website at www.southampton.liu.edu/ for the latest information on the campus graduation plans.  This website will not, however contain information about the Friends World commencement plans.  This information is enclosed in this packet and on our website at www.liu.edu/friendsworld

If you are planning to participate in the Sunday graduation, you must make arrangements for your cap and gown directly with the college bookstore (631-287-8371) or you may tell me your height and frame (S, M, L, XL) and send a check for $36.95(price includes the tax) made out to Barnes & Noble (include on the check a local telephone number and your driver’s license ID#) and I will order one for you.  Friends World students also wear a very special Friends World Program sash with their robes. This sash requires a $50 returnable deposit that also needs to be reserved with me in advance (that check can be made out to the Friends World Program).

Enclosed in the packet are formal invitations you may want to use for inviting your guests to the LIU, May 22, 2005 Graduation exercises.   Students who participate in this program will also receive 3 complimentary tickets for the Sunday morning brunch.  Extra tickets can be purchased for $7.50 each. No special invitation is necessary for our special FW event on Saturday and the activities held on May 21st are gratis, but you will need to provide me with the number of guests you are bringing, as we need to prepare ahead of time for the breakfast, lunch and the reception.  Also enclosed in the packet are directions to the campus, information on how to stay on campus for the graduation weekend, Southampton College’s graduation information, and the Chamber of Commerce’s list of places to stay in the visit.

Here is a checklist that I hope you find useful in planning the details of your graduation:

___            All necessary graduation papers are filed with Jennifer Piddington.

___            I have e-mailed my biographical details/student profile to Chris Cooper by April 4, 2005

___            I have informed Friends World staff of the technology I need available for my presentation.

___            Guests have been invited.

___            I am planning to attend only the May 21 commencement activities and have informed Friends World staff of my number of guests.

___            I have sent a $50 returnable deposit for the commencement sash (payment enclosed)
