Beach
Channel High/Southampton Graduate Campus
An
Educational Partnership
Opening
Doors, Creating Opportunities
Beach Channel
High School in Rockaway Park Queens, NY and Southampton Graduate Campus
of Long Island University in Southampton, NY began a discovery and
exploration process in May, 1999 that resulted in an innovative
and ongoing partnership.
Both schools
have benefited from the collaboration. BCHS has enhanced its college
preparatory program, and Southampton Graduate Campus has gained a better
understanding of the learning and living needs of urban students.

The schools
are demographically diverse. Southampton Graduate Campus is located in one
of the most famous beach resorts in the world. Beach Channel is
an inner-city high school. But they share a common core. Each is
located on a bay, and each offers an outstanding oceanographic and
marine science program. Each is led by dynamic educators willing
to try new ideas.
The partnership
has flourished, and activities to date have included faculty and
student exchanges, scholarship programs, diversity retreats, summer
workshops, and mentorships.
"All the
participants in the collaboration have been energized by the possibilities
generated whenever dedicated educators meet. Both communities have
contributed from the head and the heart, and the result is inspiring."
