credits


how many credits can I transfer?
Southampton accepts up to 68 credits from a two-year college, and up to 98 credits from a four- year college. Without an associate's degree, only courses withgrades of C or above are transferable.

how will my credits fit into my major at Southampton?
Make an appointment, bring in your transcripts, and we'll give you a tenatative transcriptbefore you decide to enroll. All we ask is that you complete an application for admission so we may create a file for you in advance. If you're undecided about your major, we'll help you determine which majors will be the most advantageous for you.

how do I apply?
Complete the Application for Admission and send it back to us with the $30 application fee. We'll need official transcripts from each college you've attended and an official high school transcript or GED score report. Art students must perform a portfolio review at Southampton Graduate Campus prior to admission. If you have been out of college for more than one term, please write a brief, one page statement about your current personal activity or employment. We'd like to know what you've been doing since you left school.

how many transfer students are there at Southampton Graduate Campus?
Each fall, between 100 -150 transfer students enroll. Half of these are from two-year schools, and half are from four-year schools. Your fellow transfer students represent about one quarter of our total undergraduate student population.

how many older, non-traditional students are there?
If you are over the age of 25, you are part of a wonderful group of focused, adult students who comprise about eighteen percent of our overall student population. You'll notice that about one in every five students at Southampton is non-traditional.

do you offer evening courses?
Yes. Southampton offers evening courses in every discipline, with convenient scheduling for the student who is looking for alternatives to daytime classes.

what if I'm not accepted?
Typically, transfer students must have at least a 2.0 cumulative average. If you do not meet this requirement, we recommend that you continue at a community college until you do. You may be able to register for some courses on a non-matriculated basis at Southampton until then. Check with your admissions counselor for details.

are there scholarships for transfers?
Yes. You may be eligible for the Academic Excellence Award, offered to students with at least 30 credits and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. There is no separate application for the TEA, and it is renewable annually as long as you maintain a 3.0 or higher at Southampton Graduate Campus. This award may be pro-rated for part time study. Southampton also offers up to four, half-tuition scholarships each fall to students majoring in Business. Students must be nominated for this Suffolk County Community College Business Award by their SCCC advisor. Other awards may be available by major, please check with your SCCC advisor for details.

what about talent awards or athletic awards?
Students majoring in Writing or Art must submit a portfolio to be considered for Talent Awards ranging from $1,000 to $6,000 per year. Athletes may compete for athletic scholarships ranging from partial to full tuition in men's lacrosse, soccer, volleyball or basketball, or women's soccer, softball, volleyball or basketball.

any other discounts I should know about?
Employees of Suffolk or Nassau County are eligible for a one-third tuition discount. Spouses and dependent children of said employees are eligible for a one-third tuition discount for up to six credits. This award may not be used in conjunction with any other Long Island University scholarship or aid award.

what about financial aid?
Over 87 percent of our students receive financial aid. To be considered, you must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Make sure you put our college code number (002755) on the form! Once we receive your Student Aid Report from the federal government, we'll do our best to package a financial aid award that meets your need. This award may be a combination of scholarship, federal, state or college grants, loans and/or work-study.

when should I file the fafsa?
Whether you're transferring in the Spring or Fall, the best time to file this form is in early January each year, when you complete your tax returns. Please note that if you're transferring to Southampton in the Spring, and didn't file your FAFSA the previous January, don't wait·do it now! You should pick up the FAFSA at SCCC, or go online to www.fafsa.gov.

what if I can't afford it?
You won't know until we've processed your aid award whether you can or not. Once we have completed your Financial Aid Award, you may meet with our Bursar to set up a payment plan.

can I live on campus?
Absolutely. Placement in a dorm room is guaranteed.

is there affordable off campus housing?
There are many houses to share very close to campus. You may also find a relatively affordable efficiency unit close by. Our Student Activities Office maintains a list of rental options, but the best place to look is in our local papers, The Southampton Press and Dan's Papers. Both have their own web sites.

what about meal plans?
Southampton offers a variety of meal plan options ranging from a debit card option to Super Value Meal packages. Meal plans are mandatory for those living on campus, and are optional for those living off campus.

is there adequate parking?
You'll find ample parking convenient to everything on campus.

are there jobs on campus?
In addition to work-study opportunities, many students find payroll positions in at Southampton Graduate Campus in the library, gymnasium, dining hall and administrative offices. These positions are open to freshmen and transfers alike.

can I use the college tutors?
You'll find our tutor schedule helpful in many academic areas. We have student and faculty tutors available to you for writing workshops, course topics and other special help. All you need to do to is sign up with the Advising Office. Tutor services are free of charge.

what about computers?
Go to Queen Anne Computing Center and request a computer account. You will have full access to our network of PC's and Mac's. You will be assigned an e-mail account with full access to the Internet. You also have the option of plugging into the network from your dorm room. Our hardware is state of the art, and our computer to student ratio is just 11:1.

health services?
We have an infirmary on-campus, and the Southampton Hospital is just 5 minutes away. We also have a full-time counselor on staff. Counseling services are offered at no charge to Southampton Graduate Campus students.

what kinds of clubs or activities can I participate in?
You may join any of our forty student-run clubs and organizations focusing on artistic, social, cultural, major-specific or career goals.

will I have access to all the facilities?
Sailboats, photo labs, high-tech computer equipment, potting wheels, wet labs, bio-chem labs, editing rooms, ratskellar and coffee pub·all of these things, and more, are available to you as a Southampton College student.

advising and registration


how do I register?
Once you've been accepted and have paid your tuition deposit, you may register by appointment with Vicky Mulvey, the Director of Advising. Mrs. Mulvey will choose a faculty advisor in your major who will help you register.

who will be my advisor?
You will be assigned a faculty member in your major who will be your advisor and mentor. You will work closely with your faculty advisor to hone your schedule each semester to meet your goals and complete your degree.

how soon can I take courses in my major?
Your first semester.

when can I do my co-op or internship?
If you are focused and begin working with the Co-op and Career Development Office right away, you will be able to do your first co-op or internship during your first semester at Southampton Graduate Campus.

honors?
If you are eligible, you will be invited to participate in our Honors Program, requiring a more demanding curriculum, special seminars and independent study. Honors students have the benefits of eligibility for Honors housing, higher academic status, and fellowship with honors students and professors.

how long will it take me to finish?
You will need to satisfy 128 credits to complete your degree, and at least thirty of these must be taken at Southampton Graduate Campus. Most transfers from Suffolk fare very well in our transfer credit evaluations. When we complete your evaluation, we will let you know exactly which credits come into your major, and which come in as electives. We will also sit you down with an advisor to plan a course of study, giving you an idea of how much time you'll need to spend at Southampton, before you enroll.

does southampton college have a core curriculum?
Yes. Most likely, you will have met the requirements for most of our liberal arts core by the time you get here, but there will be at least a few core courses you'll need to satisfy at Southampton.

do you have an articulation agreement for my major?
As of the printing of this piece, Southampton Graduate Campus maintains articulation agreements for majors in Graphic Design, Art, Biology, Marine Biology, Accounting and Business Administration. Through each of these articulation agreements, students may be advised of the proper course of study at SCCC, in preparation for transfer to Southampton. Students completing the course requirements as defined in each articulation agreement will be automatically accepted at Southampton Graduate Campus, and have the assurance of degree completion within four years of study.
