Admissions

Is there an application deadline?
We have a rolling admissions policy and will accept freshmen, transfer and graduate applications until the beginning of each semester. However, a completed application must be received by January 15th to be considered for an invitation to Scholar's Day.

What is Scholar's Day?
Scholar's Day is an annual event where applicants with at least an 85 average and 1100 SAT or 24 ACT score compete in a scholarship competition. Scholarships range from $6,000 to full tuition.

What credentials must be submitted to properly file an application?
Freshmen are required to submit official copies of secondary school records, and SAT and/or ACT scores. We recommend you submit an essay (topic of your choice) and two letters of recommendation.

Transfers are required to submit all official college transcripts and official proof at graduation.

International students are required to submit official high school and/or college transcripts, TOEFL, SAT or ACT scores, two recommendation letters, and a personal statement.

Graduate students are required to submit a degree-noting college transcript, recommendations, and in some cases, must interview with a director. Some graduate programs have additional admission requirements.

H.E.O.P. (Higher Education Opportunity Program) applicants must complete a H.E.O.P. application and all corresponding materials. Call (631) 287-8356 for details. H.E.O.P. applicants must be residents of New York State and must be academically and financially eligible.

How long does it take to process an application and when will the acceptance letter be mailed?
Our admissions team will process completed applications within a week of receiving all required official documents. An admissions decision will be made and the corresponding letter will be sent promptly.

Is an application fee required and, if so, how much?
Yes, $30. Students in need may request an official waiver from their high school guidance counselor or college advisor. All fee waivers must be in writing and should be addressed to the Director of Admissions. There is no application fee if you apply online.

Is there a visitation day for prospective students?
Yes, we offer a Daily Visit Program, Monday through Friday. In addition, we hold information sessions with campus tours two Saturdays a month, and host a Fall and Spring Open House. To make an appointment, call (631) 287-8200.

Does the college provide overnight housing for prospective student visits?
Yes, for undergraduate students, by appointment only.

What is the average fall enrollment?
Approximately 1450 total; 1250 are undergraduates; about 450 are new students. The college normally enrolls between 275-300 freshmen and 110-150 transfers each year.

Does the college recommend a minimum SAT/ACT score for admission?
Yes. A 1000 SAT combined, or 21 ACT composite score are preferred for all entering freshmen. The average SAT score of the incoming Fall 2000 class was 1075. Special exceptions may apply.

Is an interview required for enrollment?
No, but it is highly recommended.

Must a physical examination be taken prior to enrollment?
Yes, and New York State requires all students to provide proof of immunization prior to enrollment.

Must a prescribed curriculum be completed in high school?
Yes. Students should be enrolled in a college preparatory program and must show success in at least 4 English, 2 math and 2 science courses. Science majors must show 4 English, 3 math and 3 science courses.

Are high school honors courses weighted in favor of the grade point average and what is the minimum GPA required?
We take regents, honors and AP courses into consideration but do not re-weight the high school average. The minimum GPA for regular admission is 80; the minimum GPA for admission into the BS in Marine Science is 85. Special exceptions may apply. The average high school GPA of the incoming Fall 2000 class was 87.65. Admission criteria are subject to change.

Will the college accept the General Education Diploma (GED)?
Yes. It must be an official GED score report with a total score of at least 250 and at least 48 in each subject.

Will the college honor a home-study program or diploma from an unaccredited private high school?
Depending on the situation, yes.

How will the college evaluate or use two or more sets of SAT/ACT scores?
We will mix and match to choose the highest combined scores.

Does the college offer an Early Admissions Program (EAP)?
Yes. High school juniors and seniors showing outstanding academic achievement may apply to enter Southampton Graduate Campus prior to graduation. The student must submit a written recommendation from his or her Principal or Guidance Counselor, must interview with Southampton's Admissions Director and must notify the college of the specific courses necessary for completion of the high school diploma.

What are the transfer admission requirements?
Transfers must show at least 30 credits of college work with a cumulative average of at least a 2.0. They must also provide official proof of graduation from high school. Students transferring with less than 30 credits must submit all high school and SAT/ACT information. Admission criteria are subject to change.

Can freshmen and transfers apply to enter in any semester?
Yes, freshmen can apply to enter in both Spring and Fall semesters, but not in Summer sessions.

Does the college offer remedial or developmental studies?
On a limited basis in writing, math and English as a Second Language (ESL).

Will the college honor either the SAT or ACT?
Yes.

Academics

What is the core curriculum or general education requirement?
The 32-credit core curriculum is as follows: three writing-intensive English courses, two courses in Arts and Media, two courses in Natural Science, two courses in Humanities, two Social Science courses, an Introduction to College course, and a Writing Proficiency Exam.

How many majors are offered?
Twenty-nine different majors with many options for additional minors and concentrations.

What is your academic calendar like?
The college has a fall and spring semester with a five-week winter break. Classes are offered during this five-week inter-session and during the summer.

Will the college honor AP (Advanced Placement) or CLEP (College Level Examination Program) and, if so, what are the minimum scores to receive credit?
A score of 3 or better on the AP exam will earn college credit. CLEP scores are reviewed independently according to test subject. Call the Registrar at (631) 287-8000 for details.

How many courses are considered a full load?
Between 12-18 credits or 4-6 courses each semester.

When must an academic major be declared?
Before junior year.

Does the college offer a tutorial service?
Yes. Tutoring is offered free of charge in the Learning and Writing Center. Most tutors are honors upperclassmen, graduate students, administrators or professors.

Will a grade of "D" transfer from other colleges?
Only if the student holds an associates degree, and the D is part of that degree. Otherwise, no.

Is physical education required?
No.

Are academic scholarships available?
Yes. They range from partial to full tuition. To qualify, students must have a GPA of at least 85 and SAT's of at least 1100 (or ACT's of 24). Transfers must show 30 credits with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Scholarship criteria are subject to change.

What are the college's strongest academic areas?
Natural Science, Writing, Fine Arts, Social Science, Business and Education. Our marine and environmental science programs are nationally recognized.

What percentage of graduates gain admission to graduate schools?
This number varies by major, but overall, approximately 39 percent of Southampton Graduate Campus graduates go on to graduate school within a year after graduation.

Does the college have a graduate school?
Yes, we offer graduate programs in accounting, business, teacher education, gerontology and writing. We also offer a five-year BS/MS program in accounting.

How long does it take to graduate?
The typical course of study is four years.

What major agent accredits the college?
The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the New York State Education Department.

What is the student-faculty ratio?

What percentage of the faculty holds a doctorate or terminal degree?
94%

Does the college offer pre-registration or telephone registration?
Yes. We prefer that the student register in person with a faculty advisor.

May freshmen have cars on campus?
Yes.

Student Life

Do fraternities and sororities exist on campus?
No. We have close to 40 clubs and organizations that are open to everyone.

Are students required to purchase a meal plan?
Yes, if they are living on campus.

Is there a dress code?
No.

What campus organizations emphasize religious activities?
Campus Crusade, Christian Club, Peconic Ministry, and Campus Parish. Students are welcome to participate in these, or form their own group. Also, several different denominations hold prayer in facilities nearby.

Is there an infirmary or health services?
Yes, and there is a hospital within 5 minutes of the campus. Two Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's) live on-campus. We have a full-time registered nurse available Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm, and two doctors on call.

What music groups exist?
Choir, ensemble, choral groups, drama club and others depending on the student body and their interests.

Does the college sponsor a drama or theater club?
Yes, the Southampton Players put on at least two major productions each year.

How long are the holiday and term breaks?
One week in the fall, 4 1/2 weeks in winter, one week in spring, and 12 weeks in summer.

Is there a job placement service or career day?
Yes, our Career Development Office has several services available to assist students with cooperative education, internships and employment. Students may also visit the Career Development home page on our web site at http://www.southampton.liu.edu/career/.

Housing

Does the college offer an option between residence halls and apartment living?
All campus housing is suite style.

Are co-ed residence halls available?
Yes, most dorms are co-ed by suite. Quiet dorms, smoke-free and substance-free dorms, an all-female dorm, honors dorms and alcohol-free dorms are also available.

Are the residence halls staffed with a resident director?
Each residence hall is staffed by a Resident Assistant (RA) who lives in the hall. Each group of residence halls is managed by a Residence Hall Director.

Are students allowed to keep alcoholic beverages, firearms or pets in their room?
Only students 21 years of age or older are allowed to keep alcoholic beverages in their room. No firearms are allowed. Small fish or pets that can live underwater for 5 minutes or more may be allowed. Check with Residence Life for details. What appliances are permitted in the residence hall? Microwaves, TV, stereo, computers, small refrigerators.

Are freshmen permitted to live off campus?
Only if their permanent residence is within a 50-mile radius of the College.

May students have private rooms?
As freshmen, only if they can prove medical need. As upperclassmen, they may request a single, but it is not guaranteed. There is an additional charge for a single room which varies by semester.

How many students typically share a room?
Two, occasionally three.

Are the residence halls air-conditioned?
No. During the typical year, air-conditioning is not needed.

Is there a tuition or room deposit required to reserve space?
Yes. Both are non-refundable and are due May 1st. Early decision admits are expected to pay deposits by February 1st.

Do the residence halls have laundry facilities?
Yes. Each quad has at least one laundry facility. Students must bring their own soap. There is a small charge for usage.

Do the rooms have private or hall baths?
All dorms have suite-style bathrooms with two or three sinks, stalls and showers in each.

Are students subject to curfew?
No.

How are the residence halls secured for the evening?
Students are responsible for locking their own suites. A 24-hour patrol maintains safety. All main gates to campus are closed to people without an ID at 8:30 p.m. Well-lit paths, with emergency phones at all dorms and around the campus provide extra security.

Athletics

What athletic scholarships are available?
Scholarships ranging from partial to full tuition are available to athletic recruits.

In what athletic division does the college participate?
N.C.A.A. Division II and E.C.A.C.

In what intercollegiate sports does the college participate?
Men's soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis and lacrosse. Women's softball, basketball, volleyball, tennis and soccer.

Does the college offer an intramural program, and which sports are the most popular?
Yes. Volleyball, tennis, tai chi, Frisbee, basketball, softball, soccer, women's lacrosse and more are offered as intramurals and/or club sports, depending on the student body.

Does the college offer cheerleading opportunities?
A dance team sometimes participates in athletic events.

What athletic facilities exist?
Athletic facilities include a gym for volleyball, basketball and tennis; outdoor tennis, soccer, lacrosse and softball fields; and a fitness trail. Beach volleyball, weight room, free weights, circuit training, ocean sports, bay sports, sailboats, Boston Whaler's, and SCUBA are also available.

Financial Aid and Expenses

What are current expenses for tuition, room, board and fees?
The total cost for 2000-2001 for a full-time undergraduate (on-campus) student is approximately $26,000.

Does out-of-state tuition apply?
No, all students are charged the same.

Are jobs available on-campus?
Yes, work-study or payroll positions are available in many departments.

How much are books?
About $400 per semester.

How do I apply for financial aid?
Students must complete the Southampton Graduate Campus Financial Aid Application attached to the Application for Admission, and the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Our CEEB code is 002755.

What scholarships may be available for my situation?
Students must complete an application for admission and financial aid, and the FAFSA, and send all transcripts and scores before we can estimate financial aid. Early decision applicants who complete the Early Estimator form can receive an estimate package prior to January 1st. Aid based on talent, athletics, merit, or need is available. About 78 percent of our students receive some type of financial aid.

Will the college bill me for tuition and fees?
Yes, a payment of 50 percent of the balance for the semester is due prior to the start of classes. Payment plans are available through the Bursar.

Will the college take a credit card?
Yes, Visa, Mastercard or Discover.

What is the refund policy?
Students must withdraw before classes start to receive a full refund. Otherwise, the student will be charged on a sliding scale as the semester progresses.

General College Questions

How large is the campus?
The campus is 110 acres overlooking the Shinnecock Bay and Atlantic Ocean.

How many buildings are located on the campus?
Forty-three, including Chancellors Hall (the new academic center), the Business Center, the Fine Arts Center, the Marine Station, Library, student union, dormitories, art studios and administrative buildings.

What year was the college founded?
Southampton Graduate Campus was founded in 1963 as part of Long Island University, the eighth largest private university in the nation. Long Island University was established in 1886.

Is there a mini-term or summer school?
Yes, we offer courses over winter break and in two sessions over the summer.

From what geographical area does the college draw most of its students?
We have many students from the North East Coast, and some from the Midwest and California. We also have students from the Panhandle Region, and we have international students as well. This year over 40% of our incoming class is from out-of-state.

Is an ROTC program available?
No.

What is the size of the community?
Southampton is one of many small villages which are part of a large, relatively rural town of approximately 50,000 people. Residential areas and villages are surrounded by farmland and water views.

What attractions are a reasonable distance from the college?
Ocean and bay beaches, artists' communities, snorkeling, SCUBA, surfing, sailing, hiking, biking, Splish Splash Water Park, Tanger Outlet Shopping Center, the Bridgehampton Shopping Commons and the Riverhead Aquarium. Manhattan is less than two hours by train, car or bus.

In what ways has the campus been adapted for people with handicaps?
Access ramps, classes on lower floors and a new academic center with an elevator are some of our facilities for people with handicaps.

What is the class attendance policy concerning cuts?
Most professors will tolerate no more than 3 absences.

What is the ratio of enrolled males to females?
35:65

Does the college offer a freshman orientation program?
Yes. A New Student Program gives each entering freshman an Orientation Program, a Freshman Student Advisor, group activities, a College 101 Workshop and support services to help them feel at home.

Does the college have a campus security force?
Yes. Foot, bike and car patrol officers work to assure the safety and well-being of our student body.

Will the college accommodate special needs such as diets, medications, psychological counseling, etc?
Yes. Students must notify the appropriate office of their needs, and the proper arrangements to help them will be made.

Who are some well-known graduates/alumni?

How does the college's size benefit students?
We are a small, liberal arts college which specializes in individual attention. Students receive one-on-one attention and can develop mentor relationships with faculty and administrators. Our focus is your success.
