Southampton's innovative Master of Fine Arts Program in Writing is
committed to meeting the needs of a society increasingly dependent
on the intelligent use of language and welcomes writers whose creativity
expresses itself in any form of words from novels, poetry, and screen
plays to scientific, social, and business analysis.
Full-time faculty include essayist and television commentator Roger Rosenblatt, novelist Robert Reeves, and Anne Algieri. All full-time faculty
are widely published as writers and scholars.
Southampton Graduate Campus is located in the heart of the Hamptons, a beautiful and world-famous seaside resort that is home to some of
the country's leading authors and communications professionals.
Distinguished authors teaching in the program include Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist and scriptwriter Jules Feiffer, science writer Dava Sobel, novelist Peter Matthiessen, critic Molly Haskell, novelist Bruce Jay Friedman, novelist Kaylie Jones, business writer Alan Weinblatt, U.S News and World Report columnist John Leo, and journalist and fiction writer Matt Klam. During the summer, there are opportunities to study with such writers as Irish legend Frank McCourt, former poet laureate Billy Collins, novelists Bharati Mukherjee and Melissa Bank, and playwright Marsha Norman.
Openness to all forms of written expression, individual attention,
and small classes taught by a nationally distinguished faculty in
a culturally rich ocean-front setting give Southampton's MFA in
Writing its special character. Courses in the 36-credit program
are offered year-round in the fall, spring, and summer. A low-residency
option and classes on the internet are designed for candidates whose
jobs, families or other commitments do not permit them to become
full-time residential students.
