Marine and Environmental
Programs On the doorstep of the Atlantic Ocean, Southampton Graduate Campus is located on the eastern tip of Long Island, NY in one of the most ecologically beautiful but fragile areas of the country. The marine and environmental programs have capitalized on this superb natural laboratory. They are nationally recognized for their excellence and have produced 31 Fulbright Scholars, two Udall Scholars and a Marshall Scholar. Alumni of the programs enjoy distinguished careers in institutions around the world, and the College is a North American affiliate of the Jacques Cousteau Society. A hallmark of the curriculum is the emphasis on hands-on learning and field observation. An on-campus Marine Station on Shinnecock Bay provides easy access to the surrounding salt ponds, bays, tidal creeks, barrier beaches, dunes, salt marshes and the open ocean. Through travel courses, internships, cooperative education and such unique programs as "Seamester" aboard a 125-foot schooner, students investigate such critical problems as the effects of PCB's on Arctic Seals, nesting sites for endangered sea turtles in Australia, and global warming and the greenhouse effect. Qualified students may spend
a full semester or longer working in such research laboratories
as Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute on Cape Cod, the Scripps
Institution of Oceanography in LaJolla, California, or the National
Marine Fisheries Service in various locations in the United States.
