| The Foreign Language Institute provides instruction to community
members in an informal, conversational setting. Most classes
are geared towards an initial acquaintance with a new language.
Spanish
Building on the existing knowledge of the students, whether you
are a beginner or experienced, this course is tailored to meet
the specific goals and interests of the group. It provides
basic vocabulary and grammar, with an emphasis on speaking and
listening for understanding. While writing and reading are
important components of the class, work is concentrated on interactive
exercises and activities that develop ease and comfort with the
spoken word. Beginner and Intermediate levels available.
Portuguese
Learn to speak conversational Portuguese from a native Brazilian
speaker. Experience the joy of communicating in a different language.
The first few classes will be held in English. Once a minimum
of proficiency is reached, only Portuguese will be spoken. Homework
will be incorporated into this 8-week session. group’s needs.
German
This course will enable students to understand a simple conversation spoken in German and to obtain a basic vocabulary in the German language. In addition, the students will study German grammar and sentence structures, and, importantly, begin to develop an appreciation of German culture, history and literature. Some German films, magazines and newspapers will be brought into the class for discussion as well as simple works by well-known German authors.
French
There are many approaches to learning French and as many reasons why a students wishes to study it. In this elementary French class, we will adopt several approaches to the language in order to have a rudimentary knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, idioms, usage and phrases. With these tools as building blocks, the student will be able to visit a French-speaking country and communicate, read signs and papers, and feel comfortable. In addition, we will introduce the class to newspaper and magazine reading, cultural information about French places and some French films and literature to start students on their ways to becoming future Francophiles!
